Sri Muktsar Sahib, District Sri Muktsar Sahib’s village Sakkan Wali’s panchayat has proven its mettle by transforming a dirty water pond in village into beautiful lake for tourists. Led by the young sarpanch Charanjit Singh Sandhu, the entire panchayat worked towards attaining a goal that has set precedence for others to follow. Now panchayat soon plans to run boats in the lake and set up a canteen for the tourists. The lake has been named after Sagar Singh Sandhu – the man who laid foundation of this village.
District’s Deputy Commissioner Dr Jaskiran Singh, IAS and the District Development and Panchayat Officer Mr Naval Kumar today visited the village to se the change heralded . Village’s sarpanch Charanjit Singh Sandhu said that the boundary wall of pond and footpath all around it was laid for walking with the funds that Chief Minister allocated to the village during sangat darshan program. with the help of landscape expert, the panchayat got landscaping around the area done and installed fancy lights and ornamental plantation around it. A path also leads into the lake where canopy has been erected providing sitting arrangement for the villagers to sit and share.
Another path leads to an archaic well, which was repaired using a special kind of brick. Panchayat has now ordered a boat and a shikara, which will be run in the lake. Spread in almost 2.75 acres of land, the lake is filled with clean water and the panchayat has made separate arrangement for draining dirty water. The panchayat has also given lake on lease for fish farming and the profit earned from this would be pumped into the lake’s beautification. Similarly, CCTV cameras too would be installed soon.
Calling the Deputy CM Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal and constituency in-charge Mr Kanwarjit Singh Barkandi as his inspiration, the village sarpanch says that his sole aim was to make Sakkan Wali a model village. Besides having a beautiful lake, the village is also house to clean and wide streets and roads that welcome the visitors. Every villager contributes towards making village clean. Besides the plantation at lake, the village will soon have more than 150 ornamental and lush green trees.
Setting an example of cordial relations, the villagers collected Rs 35 lacs using which it is erecting a 120 feet by 80 feet wide community hall wherein AC hall too would be constructed. There are no encroachments over government land in this village and instead the villagers have themselves given land to the village for widening of streets and roads. For the development purpose, the villagers here have risen above the political lines. Even the village sarpanch holds the village’s unity responsible for its varied developmental works. He says that its due to the unmatched unity amongst villagers that the village is registering growth by leaps and bounds.
Deputy Commissioner Mr Jaskiran Singh IAS asked panchayat to prepare a list of the pending works so that the Punjab government can issue grants for the same.
Prominent among others [resent included former chairman Mr Hardeep Singh, Mrs Sukhdeep Kaur Sandhu member block samiti, religious committee president Mr Gurmeet Singh, Mr Parampal Singh, school development committee president Mr Mohan Singh, former sarpanch Mr Hardiljit Singh, Mr Balraj Singh Pappa, Gurnam Singh, Nikka Sandhu and others were also present.
